If you’ve been daunted by the thought of having to update your profile, or haven’t really had the time to give it the attention it requres, here are a few hints that take no time at all that’ll get you on the way to that job of your dreams!

6 easy ways to make your LinkedIn profile stand out from the crowd

1) Profile Photo

It’s very easy to get this wrong, or not put anything at all. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just a simple portrait with a blank background. No selfies, and absolutely no funny faces. It sounds obvious, but you’ll be surprised.

2) Headline

There is much debate for what to do in this part. Some people put their job title and at which company they’re working at, but if you want job opportunities to come to you, and want to present yourself and your values – you can use your headline to capture your profile and your what you stand for as a professional (imagine it like a Tweet).

3) Your LinkedIn URL

Many people aren’t aware that you can create your own LinkedIn profile which can be put on your CV. As a default, LinkedIn provides you with a numerical link, however, just by going to the edit page, you can create your own (if it hasn’t yet been taken) with your full name.

4) Summary

The summary should be situated under the heading of your profile, and should be no more than two paragraphs basically introducing yourself, your work, responsibilities and your achievements.

5) Skills and Endorsements

It’s very easy to get your contacts to endorse you for your strengths. This will help backup your claims that you perhaps have already mentioned in your headline or summary. By sending a mail to various contacts asking to be endorse for certain things, will help rank you higher on a LinkedIn search, and make you profile more credible to potential employers. If you start endorsing people for certain skills relevant to them, you may find they return the favor without having to ask.

Recommendations is basically a platform for some of your contacts to give you a reference, which ultimately backs up any job you’ve ever had and any statement you may have made about yourself.
